The Design:

The starting point for Sarah and Alex's invitation was the view from NZ High Country, looking towards Coronet Peak. From the place where they would be married, the surrounding landscape became the inspiration for the illustration.

Sarah was drawn to landscape-led invitations and had a clear direction for the colour palette, choosing pistachio, Becky blue, olive and sage. She also wanted to incorporate peonies into the design.

As I developed the illustration, I kept coming back to the experience of standing in that landscape. The mountain ranges don't sit as a single line on the horizon—they layer and stack into the distance. That became the foundation of the design. The peonies naturally found their place as texture within the mountain forms, adding softness without distracting from the landscape. The finished illustration captures the layered ridgelines, changing light and sense of depth that make the landscape at NZ High Country so distinctive.
