Beyond the Expected | Canaan Downs Editorial 2026

Some of the most exciting creative projects begin with a willingness to push the boundaries of what's familiar.

For this wedding editorial at Canaan Downs, The Armarie Room collaborated with Roam Events and a talented group of creatives from the Top of the South to explore a more unconventional approach to wedding design.

It was an opportunity to lead with design, experiment with materials and bring ambitious ideas to life. And what an incredible landscape to work with! Canaan Downs really is a special place.

Exploring paper beyond print

Paper is an incredibly versatile material, and this editorial called for exploring its potential beyond traditional wedding stationery.

Roam Events introduced the idea of incorporating paper weaving into the tablescape, which opened up an exciting process of experimentation. I explored varying the widths, colours and weaving patterns, working through how the pieces could be constructed and arranged to create movement, texture and visual interest across the tables.

The finished pieces were handwoven from strips of sandalwood paper, creating intricate patterns that stretched across the tables and draped over their edges. The weaving brought a sculptural quality to the setting, with its soft, earthy tones and layered textures reflecting the surrounding landscape and natural grasses.

Alongside the weaving, I also created an origami menu designed to be held, unfolded and explored. Its folded structure added another tactile aspect to the table, inviting guests to interact with the design rather than simply read it.

Both pieces explored the possibilities of paper in different ways, combining interesting details with more ambitious structural elements.

The value of creative collaboration

What made this editorial particularly rewarding was the opportunity to work alongside other creatives who were equally interested in challenging conventions and exploring new ideas.

From the sculptural installations to the layered textures of the tablescape, every contribution helped bring a shared vision to life.

For me, this is where some of the most interesting creative work happens. When there's room to experiment, try different approaches and draw on the expertise of different creatives, there's so much more room for unexpected ideas to emerge.
