CARVE 03. | Embossing and Texture
Master Embossing and Texture Techniques for Relief Printing
Do you love the look of embossed artwork and wonder how to achieve this effect? Are you curious about bringing more texture, depth, and tactile detail into your prints? This course is designed for you—a chance to explore embossing techniques and learn how to create richly textured relief prints.
In this course, we’ll be working with woodblocks—so if you’ve never carved on wood before, this is a great place to start. You’ll learn effective mark-making techniques to create embossed and surface effects, while still enjoying the creative freedom to explore your own ideas. If time allows, you can also experiment with layering prints to build even more depth and complexity into your work. Your tutor will be there to guide, support, and help refine your process along the way.
What You’ll Learn:
Embossing Techniques: Learn how to create beautiful blind embossing (printing without ink) and combine embossing with inked prints for stunning results.
Surface Texture Effects: Experiment with surface textures, chine collé, and selective inking to add tactile and visual interest to your prints.
Layering Prints: Have a go at layering prints and trying out block registration to add depth to your designs.
Press Technique: Print your designs using our rare 1860 Albion Press and traditional etching press for professional-quality, beautifully crafted prints.
You’ll have time to explore, refine, and experiment with these skills, crafting original artworks in our purpose-designed studio. With a small class size and a supportive atmosphere, you’ll feel encouraged to take risks and try new ideas—and leave with a collection of original, richly textured artworks you’ll be proud of.
Who’s It For:
This course is ideal for anyone who has completed an introductory relief printing class and wants to expand their skills with embossing, texture, and layering techniques. If you’re new to relief printing, we recommend starting with Carve 01: Carving Essentials before joining this course.
